VISITOR VISA EXTENSION.

PATHWAY TO TEMPORARY RESIDENCE IN CANADA

VISITOR VISA EXTENSION OVERVIEW.

A temporary resident visa (TRV) or visitor visa is a document issued by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows foreign nationals to enter Canada as tourists, students, or workers for a limited period of time.

However, sometimes the initial period of stay granted on a visitor visa may not be sufficient for an individual's needs. In such cases, it is possible to apply for an extension of visitor visa.

If you’re unsure of how to begin your immigration journey, our team offers a consultation service where we can evaluate your unique circumstances and recommend the most suitable immigration options for you. Our focus on personalized solutions ensures that every client receives the highest level of service and support throughout their immigration journey.

Who can extend their Visitor Visa?

If you wish to extend your stay in Canada as a visitor, you need to apply for a visitor record. A visitor record is an excellent option for individuals already in Canada who wish to extend their stay or change their status.

What is a visitor record?

A visitor record is not a visa. It's a standalone document granted by IRCC that enables a foreign national to stay in Canada for an extended period. The visitor record comes with a new expiry date, signifying the updated date by which you must leave Canada.

You may apply for a visitor record if you fall into any of the following categories:

  1. You are a visitor who wishes to stay longer in Canada.

  2. You are a worker who is authorized to work without a work permit and you want to prolong your stay.

  3. You are a student who is authorized to study without a study permit and you need to extend your stay.

  4. You are a study permit holder intending to change your status to a visitor.

  5. You are a work permit holder planning to switch your temporary resident category to a visitor.

When should you send your Visitor Visa Extension Application?

The average processing time for a visitor visa extension is approximately 64 days. To ensure a smooth transition and avoid the risk of losing your legal status in Canada, apply for an extension of your stay or for a change in status at least 30 days before your current status expires.

What should you do while waiting for your extended Visitor Visa?

While waiting for your Visitor Visa extension in Canada, maintain your legal status as a visitor. Continue following the conditions of your original visitor visa until an official decision is made regarding your extension application.

Do you need to apply for another Visa to enter Canada again?

You need a valid visitor visa every time you want to enter Canada. The only exceptions to this rule are if you’re returning directly from a visit to the United States or Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.
